Going for Team Fortress 2 as well.

This is something a lot of people don't get! TF2 was a game changer in terms of character design. "Realisitc military shooter graphics" wasn't just dominating the genre, it was basically all there was, and it was what gamers were demanding more of. In fact, when Valve did an early playtest of TF2, the playtesters hated the cartoony characters. To Valve's credit they put more faith into their designers than they did the tastes of their playtesters, and continued on to create one of the most visually recognizable and iconic games of all time.

Command & Conquer Red Alert™ 2

The game that sparked my interest in RTS strategy games.

I wouldn't say the original Donkey Kong Country sucked but 2 is a miles better than the original (in my opinion at least)

  • Mega Man 2
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Assassin's Creed 2
  • Final Fantasy XIII-2 (arguably)
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Street Fighter 2
  • Twinsen's Little Big Adventure 2
  • Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (arguably)
  • Freedom Planet 2

Quite honestly, it would make more sense to include immediate game sequels that weren't as good as the original (such as Zelda II: Link's Adventure or The Last of Us Part II, arguably), or make a separate forum thread about movie sequels that are actually better than the original, which seems to be much more rare (but not impossible--Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, anyone?). In gaming or anything related to programming, it's usually just a good idea to make a sequel to expand upon the original as well as fix the original's flaws. Regardless, whether it's movies, games, or even software, there's a point of diminishing returns for an excessive amount of sequels to the original. Still, as long as a franchise doesn't overdo it with safe sequels, sequels in video games tend to fare better both critically and commercially (plus stand the test of time better than the original) in video games, as there are usually obvious flaws in the original that can be comfortably fixed in a sequel.

In many games I would just ignore it completely.

Also, above-ground railroads are kinda useless; since they require stations.

True.

The Soviets, my perspective; the faction is still fun to play as. I find it deeply satisfying how broken and depressed the conscript sounds. It fills my heart with immense joy, knowing that my poor strategic decisions are sending hundreds of people to their doom.

Team Fortress 2, this is my favorite game of all time, I've play this game for 12 years.

I'm proud to be a TF2 Veteran

idk if some1 said that but tboi, rebirth is better than flash version

Just for the record: I'm mainly responding because y'all are monsters(!) and left out the most important one. The rest of my list is just set-dressing in comparison. ;)

Day of the Tentacle (AKA Maniac Mansion II: Day of the Tentacle)

was unquestionably better than

Maniac Mansion!

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

was a lot more fun that

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

for me.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines

turned out a better (or at the very least more memorable and beloved) game than

Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption

And that despite Bloodlines releasing in "a ****ing state"...

I'd replay Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2)

over

Final Fantasy Adventure AKA Mystic Quest (Seiken Densetsu)

 on any given day.

Final Fantasy Adventure was very nice, but didn't hold a candle to Secret of Mana.

I think most would agree that

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

found more fans than

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain,

be we're starting to get into territory where opinions would be divided.

Laura Bow: The Dagger of Amon Ra

 was better than is prequel

Laura Bow: The Colonel's Bequest,

but a big part of that might have been more capable PCs and such...

Neither of them was great (or even recommendable) in my opinion, but your mileage might differ.

Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods

 >

Populous.

It seems likely that some would also have opinions about the following games (but I'm not familiar enough with them myself, but I'm listing them for those who might get nostalgic for being reminded of them):

Star Control Vs. Star Control II

System Shock Vs. System Shock 2

Arena Vs. Daggerfall

Lufia & the Fortress of Doom Vs. Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals

Clock Tower Vs. Clock Tower 2

(These might be more known to people who know how to make use of an emulator... ;) )

But yeah: Games were fun...

I think Street Fighter is definitley chief among them. The only reason anyone cares about Street Fighter 1 is for historical purposes and some of the characters outside the iconic ones like Ryu, Ken and Sagat
