I bought the original box version 20 years ago.
Then resented having to tie it to a Steam account.
A truly prophetic sig...
As well as that, it's completely free on Steam! For the next 2 days, get it quick!

I already have it and the best part is that you can play all in one! You don't have to pay for episodes, also Valve added workshop support for Half-Life 2!
it looks like they combined the dlc episodes into the main game. which is great! also Workshop!!
and of course there is a resident evil 2 mod

anyway I haven't tested it out yet but new achievements! (episode 1 and 2)
and that's mean I have to get all of them again. which is something I have done already.
oh well can't wait to try it out.

Never played HL2 in my life. At time I might have considered but as it is, there are other stuff diverting my attention already.
I hope we can do that when portal is 20 years old

Up until that point, I've played every single game from the CD.
Also, still living at home with my brother complicated things.

Just saw this cool tribute by Marphy Black! He also made a tribute for GldSrc during Half-Life 1's 20th anniversary in 2018.
Valve isn't perfect but I do appreciate them doing stuff like this. Especially how cheap their games go in sales. I got Portal 1 and 2 in a sale for under £2 total (wasn't a bundle btw) and yeah they may have sat in my library for a couple months, but I don't buy games often so I did get 'round to playing them to completion at one point. The old games going really cheap (and in this case free) in certain points of time is a really nice gesture and that's why I haven't pirated any Valve games as it's easier in most cases to wait for them to go under a quid (which is most of the time I open Steam as I don't play games often anymore). Digital games having prices change like that reminds me of how physical games can change in price over time so there's also the logical sense that a 20 year old game isn't going to be the same price of a modern game.
Overall, it's a genius marketing technique as now a lot of people my age, who weren't even born when Half Life 2 came out, would probably have played it for the first time (and Half Life 1 is like 70p so they got my money there) and because I've heard it's a wonderful game, there's going to be attention around it even after the sale ends on the 22nd so there's the people who buy it full price there, and also the people who played it when it was on sale and liked it and now want to cover their shelves with merch. It shows they have confidence that the game is good enough to reach this and it also boosts their public perception with gamers who already treat them like the second coming of Christ which would be very handy in the long run. Reputation is very important in running a successful business in the long run so while it may seem like a financial loss to make a game like Half Life 2 free for about a week, it boosts your reputation which makes it so the rare occasion when Valve actually releases a game, or hardware as they seems to be more focused on nowadays, people are more willing to throw money at them and thus more money.

See? Told ya!
Turned 20 years into what?
IT TURNED 20 YEARS INTO WHAT!?!?
I heard achievements for the Parts Unlock as you play through HL2, but I wonder if I don't need to install HL2 Part 1+2 at all, to play them in the OG HL2.
Combining the two parts into the core game is something I never realized needed to happen either, considering they're directly the next chapters after the main game.
Plus you could always mod the game, but the steam workshop makes it a lot easier.
I also heard they made bug fixes to the HL2 Campaign for Gmod, which is ironic since you can just mod HL2 as easily as Gmod.
Take it with a grain of salt, I am slower than a snail.

Yup! Hasn't aged one iota since it first came out.
