Normal Super Mario 64, because M64DS fucks the entire pacing up by making each ability restricted to each character, sure Yoshi can swap caps, but you have to seek them out and you lose it when you get hit at all, plus you have to turn into non-Yoshi Mario anyways to fight Bowser.
It adds new content, and imo it feels about the same gameplay and physics wise, but the pacing ruins it.
Take it with a grain of salt, I am slower than a snail.
I'd say stick with the original, the movement is better and it looks better in my opinion, if you really want to play as another character just download a mod or sm64 pc port. Not saying that the DS version is trash or awful but if you already have the original game theirs no need to get it for a weaker system
If it wasn't for the fact that the DS really fucking up by not having a joy pad, I'd actually say SM64DS just because the extra content was a nice bonus. I actually didn't mind the pacing as much.
But at the end of the day the original just does it better. The only way you can really enjoy SM64DS is by owning a 3DS and playing it on there because I feel that, while it was impressive that they managed to offer controls for SM64 on the touch screen it wasn't really meant for that kind of full on capability control wise and felt more experimental at best. And it feels weird playing Super Mario 64 with a D-Pad.
Super Mario 64 DS. Sure a D-pad is worse than a joystick for a 3D game but in my honest opinion it's very over blown on how "bad" it supposedly is. For what it had to work with it works pretty well. Comparing it to Rayman DS, another 3D platformer on DS and you can see how much better Super Mario 64 DS works.
The extra content is also what makes the game more fun to me. It's more Super Mario 64 so I'm not complaining.
SM64 for sure. 1: Ive played it alot more, 2: Best modding community for a game ever, and 3: Better to emulate ngl
idk, never played DS one, maybe someday.

Honestly it feels somewhat omay with the DPad but you're not going to get the same enjoyment as you would with a 3ds imho.
Now touch screen on the other hand sucked unless you were playing mini games.

I've heard that the 3DS's thumbstick doesn't help much since it is still 8 directions and doesn't have analog movement.

You should definitely play it! I think both have their perks, even if you're controlling Mario through a D-pad
DS is nice visually, but N64 controls better. Personally, I liked DS more with the extra stuff/minigames/VS but the lack of analog is rough. I kinda wish all that content got baked into the pc port as a mod one day and then it'd have the best of both.

I remember the controls being better than you'd expect for a d-pad. To 13 year old me it was pretty much just SM64 on the go.

They could all swap caps, and if an objective needed a specific character there was pretty much always a relevant cap nearby.
Mario 64! The movement is so good in that game, and it still has some of the best feel and controls in a lot of platforming imo. So much you can do, and doing speed running tricks is really fun....
Mario 64DS.... not so much lmao Wario and Yoshi are so slow, and you can only move in 4-directions lol. It is still a portable mario 64, so it is still fun imo, and for a launch game for the DS it was still alright i suppose. That being said, I saw a run of 64DS where they beat the game without getting mario, and it was insane lol.

Yeah. I've seen a couple of Super Mario-related videos where the player beats the game without using Mario lol

i just like original sm64 its classic
sure i like sm64 ds, but original sm64 is just an classic
I love the ds version but I'd be lying if I said I preferred it over the original. While the controls aren't terrible, you just can't replicate the feel of a thumbstick with a d pad. Again the controls on DS are fine, I didn't even realize they were lacking until I played the original, but it still isn't nearly as tight as the 64.
I do love the minigames they added and the fact that you can play as Yoshi, Luigi and Wario but they also cause problems. I hate how they seperated a bunch of stars and power ups to be character specific. I get that they wanted you to play with each character but it's such a pain in the ass having to go the doors or find hats to get them. I especially hate how you lose the hats after one hit, so everytime you get hit you have to stop what you're doing and backtrack to find the right hat. Why couldn't they just let you change them in the menu or something instead of making you backtrack? I especially hate Wario, he's so slow and can barely jump, Why did Nintendo feel the need to force you to regularly play as a character that sucks at jumping in their platforming game? Just let me play as Luigi and leave me alone!
I hope Nintendo remakes 64 and combines them both to make the perfect version. Imagine how good it be to play Mario 64 as any of the 4 characters mentioned with the controls of the original. Maybe if we're lucky the switch 2 will gift us with it.
Combine both and make a modern, definitive/remaster with local multiplayer and more levels and stars.
Also make Toad and Peach playable.
A truly prophetic sig...

It's alright. It's definitely a departure from the original though. I haven't played it in a long time cause my DS died, but from what I recall it was serviceable

Súper Mario 64
HELLO BITCHES
The 64 Magical hats are more consistent than DS flower enchantment changes with each person. Does not help that powers have more iconic items including from the 64.
The Identity hats did make think the Toads would likely wear them. Toadette is evidence with the super crown and Bowser did it with his minions in the first game. It is more giving them taste of their power than to be decoys.
I love Super Mario 64 DS. I like being able to play as Yoshi hehe
Hold Y to run. Instant 0/10 fuck off. The original is way better.
"Say that actually smells, kinda good." "Smells like chicken." "Slow roasted goodness."
Well, I'll put it like this. I've gone back to beat, and 100% the 64 version multiple times. I haven't finished the DS port even once. I kinda just ran around and goofed off, but never actually finished it. It just didn't feel very good to play. No hate to people who enjoy it tho.
