underground games? Dec 6, 2024

Heya NG, I'm looking for recommendations for the real hidden stuff that has a specific charm to it.

Games with an average of 0 online players sort of deal; if I had to give an example, something like "a pet shop after dark", my personal favorite game despite having quite literally no playerbase in the modern day.

I've mentioned Terranova a couple times before on NG, but I imagine it'd be right up your alley - the game itself is a piece of interactive fiction set in a roleplay community in the early '00s, and holds a pretty hefty amount of charm.

Its available on Steam and itch.io - take your pick.

he/they - pretty cool guy

Really thought from the title I was going to be able to talk about Steamworld Dig and Dig-Dug.

Anyhoo, I don't know if you're into Boomer Shooters, but the Boomer Shooter Sub-Reddit is filled with discussions about really low budget homemade stuff, many discussions including the cats that made the games.

The game boils down to how many beers can you drink and get home safely while out and about in the Bri*ish slums. The only people ive seen play it nowadays are old Br*tish people and Ross Scott so its pretty underground. Ik its for the commodore 64 but the audio files are online so ur good gang!!

Home, its where I want to be

But I guess I'm already there

Really, almost every game you can find on Flathub is some obscure thing. And if it's not a game, it's Steam or a Minecraft launcher or an emulator. Here are some quality standouts.

  • Frogatto & Friends is a pixel art 2D platformer that has existed in playable form since like 2009 but is still getting updates.
  • Warsow is a very hype arena shooter that advances the formula of Quake 3. I really love the art style. It's been around since like 2005 but good art styles never age.
  • Teeworlds is a 2D platformer arena shooter with fun momentum-related mechanics.
  • Neverball is about rolling a ball around. Apparently, there's a VR mode for extra torture!
  • rRootage is a bullet hell with patterns so dense it lags. It's made by a Japanese dev who really loves bullet hells.

There is a not-so-well-known website called Glorious Trainwrecks, many game developers have posted their prototypes and POCs here. Surprisingly, it's still rather active these days, despite being a small obscure website.

Here you can even find games by some of the greatest game developers of this era, like Terry Cavanagh of VVVVVV and Anna Anthropy of REDDER. Hell, even Bennett Foddy of Getting Over It had posted two games here. But of course, most games here are made by lesser-known developers and are destined to fall into obscurity.

Cod DS was peak. I remember playing multiplayer cod4 with my friend via ds download play. There were only two levels we could choose but we played forever anyways. The models and animations in those games were so silly and janky but I loved them. Black ops with zombies was kind of incredible

If you have a PC, Play blockstorm with a bunch of friends... As it's PURE CHAOS when there are people. It's the best FPS game ever made, in my opinion. Best voxel fps. As you can customize everything about the game.

POWDER

My favorite roguelike.

If you dig around you can find ports for Android, GBA, etc.

There are tile packs you can get for the game as well.
