2024 Student Film Showcase

Continuing the tradition from 2022 and 2023, here’s a roundup of student films shared on NG this year!

If you’ve shared an animated film made for school, tag your entry with “student-film” and the optional “thesis-film” tag if it’s your thesis film. Additional context in the author commentary is helpful, including what art school you attend and what year of school you were in when you made the piece. Information like this helps people who are curious about schools and is useful for historical documentation.

I know you're joking, but this meme is getting really old.

I'll share some of my thoughts on this: I do think jokes like that discourage CalArts students from posting on NG and I also think it's an unfair generalization, as all sorts of impressive work comes out of CalArts. People basically fault CalArts for being the source of an iconic style, the same way they fault Newgrounds for the "ugly looking character" style that was popularized here (I still like that style just fine btw, it's fun to draw ugly characters).

I don't like to use the term "CalArts style". And it's has nothing to do with John Krisfalusi. Firstly: it's because it has little to do with the actual CalArts university, and second: because it's not a style. It's a trend. ;P

I just had a chat the other day about how difficult it is to find student films online and suddenly here's a whole collection, what a coincidence. SCAD's work was the main complaint as the student shows are normally amazing, a shame there's only one here (so far!?).

dang, kinda sad to see scad rep tank considering the student films posted on this site is what pushed me to go there :(

and unfortunately im a game dev major so i can't help out in that department haha. hopefully i can convince my anim friends to post their films when they get to that point :)

It's cool to hear student films on NG can have the sort of impact I imagine them having, where people choose schools based on liking the student films here. Hopefully more SCAD students will turn up!

Do you have any personal thoughts on vimeo? I wonder if there is any visibility differences for some sort of major project to get made (Such as a big time studio picking up a project the student made) because they were found on newgrounds vs vimeo.
