What's the best quality of mp3 should an audio file be for the audio portal? I'm asking more like what size do you guys typically use, I know size depends, but what do you usually use.

When someone uses your tracks in a flash movie(the purpose of the AP) the quality decreases a lot. So it's pointless to upload a track with a bitrate of 320. I think it's best to upload it at 128, maybe 160.
ummm... are you asking what kind of file to use, or the size. mp3 is the best for me. and the size of mp3 is larger than wav. but it also depends on how big the file is. there is no telling how big it will be. maybe i dont understand your question. maybe you are talking in terms of 56k, 128k, 256k, 300k. well obviously the bigger the better in this case. well good luck with whatever your trying to do.
The higher the sample rate, the bigger the file is going to be.

I have NEVER heard of an mp3 being larger than a wav. Am i entirely ignorant?
The comment based on sample rate is mostly correct.

lol, no. I haven't, either.

Yeah, but I agree with Nijsse: people who use your audio in Flash (which is the reason you SHOULD be uploading to the AP) will most likely drop the bitrate to 32 kbps or less, so there's little point making it any better quality than 128

I'd have to disagree. Studio musicians use at least 192kbps - this gives a great quality. It also means that when you convert again you would lose less quality as you are converting from a high quality file to a low quality file as opposed to a medium quality file to a low quality file. If you see what I mean. ;-)
According to the Nyquist theorem (Google it if you want further proof), your sampling rate should be a little over double the highest frequency in the audio in order to retain all the sound in the audio.
Because the highest frequency a human ear can detect is somewhere around 20kHz, that is where we come up with the 44.1kHz sampling rate on CDs. So by the Nyquist theorem, you shouldn't need more than 44.1kHz. Whether this is actually true in practice, I can't say. I don't know if you actually lose anything if there are frequencies above 22.05kHz, for example.

Well, what if you have a like 3 second wav, and a 3 minute mp3 at 320 k, then yeah, the mp3'll be higher =P
