Terrible, dissapointing, misserable excuse for a Mario game.
What went wrong?
No Yoshi. I could end the review right here and Im sure that that would be sufficient info as to why not to buy this game, but I'll elaborate further. There is no Yoshi. No blue, no green, no red, no yellow, NO YOSHI. Not tongue nor tail of the fellow. Care to tell me why one of the most popular and creative items of the series is removed from this game?
No flying powerup. No cape, no racoon suit, no wings, no take off. I loved these power-ups, they are second only to Yoshi in my heart. But Im afraid the NEW Super mario Brothers have no need to fly.
Lame new powerups. Small mushroom. Great, I can get down a pipe or enter a secret world at the cost of not being tall. God forbid you accidentally grab a regular mushroom, because then you might have to play the whole level again! Way to go. The Giant Mushroom is lame. You always conserve it, and conserve it, and when you use it, nothing spectacular happens. Its the same as a star, except you cant enter small spaces or use pipes. THE SHELL. I HATE THE SHELL WITH A PASSION. You rarely get this piece of crap, and when you do, you slide across the ground and then frantically try to jump as you approach a cliff, unsecussfully, might I add.
Lame Bosses. Five hits with a fire flower, the boss is dead. Bowser, Baby Bowser, Petey Parana, all dead, five hits. Very unfair considering how often you have the chance to get one of these. Baby Bowser has to be beaten at least every world, at least. You knock a shell into him, he falls down, you ground pound him twice, you win. This is how it goes the whole game. Bowser is as simple as running under him and getting that axe. Come on. One of the few things you take from an old Mario game is completely lame. You fight Bowser three times like this, yawn.
And the most important reason...
The game can be beaten in one sitting. I beat the first world rather quickly, then found a cannon that shot me to level five. I finished that world quickly by finding a warp pipe which led me to the boss of that world. From there, I easily completed the last two worlds. Total time taken: Three hours.

It really is a shame the way this game turned out. I was hopping for a Super Mario World or Super Mario Brothers 3, but this game is on par with Mario Teaches Typing. Only buy it if you really like Mario.
Overall: 4/10.
