So... is there only like one melody for the soundtrack now?

Anyway, I found the flatline episode to be rather enjoyable.
I felt that his little dance that he did after moving the Tardis with his hand funny, for the wrong reason though.
It seemed rather, random and out of character.

There's no way I watched the same episode as everyone else did. Kill the Moon was at least entertainingly bad. I was bored as fuck during this one, there was literally nothing I liked about it. Clara's 'I'm the Doctor' killed me on the inside.

How the hell is this the same guy who wrote Mummy on the Orient Express?

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeah... That's no doubt the weakest story from the season. While it did have some moments, some things felt from out of nowhere and making statements that everyone will forget that an overgrown forest in London ever happened? Not buying it.

Response to Doctor Who Crew 2014-10-26 16:23:46

I actually quite enjoyed that. Nice "calm before the storm" episode leading into the finale. Still enjoying the interactions between Clara and The Doctor, kids were less infuriating than the ones we've previously had, and it confirmed that The Doctor, like Batman, is easily defeated by covering a city in trees.

Have to wonder if Swamp Thing was an influence on it, actually. It was basically The Doctor vs The Green, after all.

For fuck's sake. They had me thinking it was Jenny right through to the end there.

Was super excited because that'd have been a very ballsy move.

Whatever though, this is cool too.

Didn't get it as soon as they made a point of The Doctor reacting all shocked to feeling her heartbeat? I was in "which time lord?" mode from that point on.

Would have bet good money on it being Jenny. She had some line about how her hearts were The Doctor's, which I thought was going to be a clever literal thing about her being his clone, and the line about leaving her for dead fits with the ending of The Doctor's Daughter too.

Eh, it's a bit of a let down, but she's already a better Master than Simm was, so I can't complain too much. Any chance to salvage Davies' disastrous handling of the character is a cause for celebration.

The Cybermen reveal was pretty decent, it didn't surprise me or anything but at least it was imaginative. I liked the bit with the eyes on the door too. Not happy to see The Master back, especially being played by someone like this. I'm hoping this will be better than Simm, but I'm preparing for the worst.

Didn't feel like the episode had any stakes at all, unless Clara got knocked up off-screen we know Danny gets out of this safe and sound and most of it felt pretty tame and lackluster for a series finale.

Oh well, I guess lackluster is just the prime adjective for this series.

Response to Doctor Who Crew 2014-11-03 19:22:15

I thought it was a good first half. It set up a good high stakes situation. Of course they ran a promo right before the show that showed cybermen in london so, that was spoiled.
But the scenario was new, the stakes high and the characters spot on. I liked how as soon as bringing Danny back occurred to her Clara went right into power grab mode. This fits perfectly with my understanding of her being a huge bitch. This also allowed the Doctor to shine, both in fooling her and in forgiving her for what was absolutely still a betrayal.
The reveal of the Mistress was a little surprising, like everyone else I'd heard the rumors about what Missy was short for but I was still shocked by a good reveal. Honestly it seemed more like something Rani would do up to that point.

I haven't looked at this thread for weeks because I hadn't kept up since Kill the Moon. I watched Mummy on the Orient Express, Flatline and in the Forest of the Night. Two great episodes and one okay episode. Kill the Moon wasn't too good, though. I like that the music isn't all the same shit we've been hearing for the last few years. It's refreshing to hear the score updated. The end of Mummy on the Orient Express when Clara wakes up on the shore is an example that comes to mind. I haven't watched Dark Water yet. Looks like the Brigadier's daughter and the girl with the inhaler are back?

There's something on which I want to hear people's thoughts. When the Doctor was talking to himself about 8 minutes into Mummy on the Orient Express, I hit rewind a few times. When he said "a mummy that only the victim can see" he sounded a lot like Tom Baker to me. Am I imagining things? Did anybody else notice this? The title of the episode already made me wonder if it was going to have anything to do with the stuff with the Osirians and all that. Of course, though, it didn't. But go back and watch that part. It's so weird. It reminded me of that episode where Matt Smith is duplicated and his copy goes "would you like a jelly baby?".

At 10/11/14 10:01 PM, Eddmario wrote: Sweet shout out to Eccleston's Doctor.

What do you mean? I must have missed this. I loved Eccleston.

edit: Oh, wait. "Are you my mummy?" lol How did I not catch that?

And that cover of Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" was pretty cool

Also missed that. I might want to re-watch.

I definitely don't understand the hate towards Clara. She's been absolutely fine this series. She was terrible before, but she's vastly better now, and she's certainly not the problem the recent episodes have been having.

I don't hate Clara herself. I just hate that she's Jebus. Jenna's done a good job
.

Adore Capaldi's Doctor and this is probably the episode he's had the most time to shine in, genuinely intrigued by the Gus stuff so I really hope that's part of the arc and not something they'll just drop now, and I really liked the scene between Clara and The Doctor at the end.

Gus sounds familiar. I wonder if I've heard the voice actor somewhere before. Made me think of the computer from Courage the Cowardly Dog and not as much, but sorta those machines in Demolition Man that fine people for profanity.

At 10/13/14 08:17 PM, Malachy wrote: I enjoyed this episode. In fact, I am enjoying this season as a whole. The development of Capaldi's Doctor is great - he is bringing a very different style to the show. I especially like how they're throwing in him giving lectures with chalkboards and diagrams in sand like a stuffy professor. Those monologues are probably my favorite parts.

Yes, I really like those bits as well. I love Capaldi as this mean spirited mad scientist.

I'm still wanting to see a return of a classic monster/villain (perhaps not for series 8 seeing as nothing has been brought back) but considering how well some of these episodes have been with new ideas, I'm happier with this direction. For writing his first Doctor Who stories here, Jamie Mathieson has made an impressive debut so I'm in favour of seeing him writing for some episodes for series 9.

I'm tired of Daleks and Cybermen, but I think they're required to use them within a certain timeframe in order to keep the rights to them. Some kind of weird legal trademark bullshit.

At 10/25/14 04:38 PM, Murray wrote: Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeah... That's no doubt the weakest story from the season.

Seriously, no. Nothing is topping Robot of Sherwood in badness this season. That and the ending of Listen with personal lord and savior Clara.

This isn't new at all, though. Think about Tenant's first episode. The whole world forgot about all of that shit. And the Stolen Earth. And Children of Earth. And the one with people getting sucked into their webcams. It happens a lot.

To be fair, in Tennents first episode the prime minister had the big space gun because people remembered the aliens, not to mention both torchwood and U.N.I.T existing. Also, in the titanic episode London was empty on christmas because people remembered how messed up every Christmas is.

You know, I'm getting tired of episodes that have like 5 twist within the first 5 minutes of the episode.
Other then that Dark Water was alright. Kinda slow at times but someway okay.

I liked the reveal of the Cybermen, and the whole "Don't cremate me" scare going on.

Is that really suppose to be the Master? I mean, I have nothing against the character being a female, but the whole "You left me for dead" line doesn't fit in.
In the End of Time, he sacrificed himself, he didn't die in the Doctor's hands....

If anything, it would make more sense if it was actually his daughter or something. Though I'm sure none of you would want that. I'm only bringing it up because she was hinted at being somewhat of a timelord, and was left for death at the end of the episode.

Anyone remember that old cartoon Pirates of Dark Water?

It's bothered me that they've ignored Jenny. I thought it might be the Rani until she said who she was.

Hell yeah, and the video game. A reboot of the show would be cool like Thundercats got (shame that was cancelled).

I'm watching the episode right now and the "Clara Oswald never existed!" line that everyone has been speculating about was just a way for Clara to trick a Cyberman?

Also, a few things I didn't get to edit into the post in time:
1. I was always wondering if Cybermen could keep their emotions and memories. Now that it's canon that it is possible for them to, it'll make for interesting future episodes
2. Who else expected Cybermen versions of Amy and Rory, or any other past allies of the Doctor who have past away, to appear?
3. Was anybody else expecting what's-her-face to turn out to be Jenny and have regenerated or that the vaporizer that Missy was using turned out to be similar to those teleporter things from the bank episode?
4. Other then an episode of No. 5 and the Cybermen, as well as the Aztecs episode with No. 1, I have never seen any classic Who episodes, but I do know enough to know the Brigadier had a cameo near the end and thought it was a nice touch.
5. I haven't gotten this close to tearing up at an episode of a tv series since Amy and Rory left.
6. I knew Nick Frost would be in the X-Mas special, but I didn't expect him to appear at the end of this episode, or that he'd be playing Santa, which so far works surprisingly well.

How many times have the cybermen been defeated by the power of love now? It's been a few. That does have the advantage that you can't say it isn't cannon. Craig did it. The lady who did her duty for queen and country did it. It feels like there's more that better fans will get.

I did like the twist at the end of Missy's plan. That is absolutely something the Master would do. That is how that particular twisted mind works. What I liked the best was that the Doctor overcame it without being led. It was his will that defeated her, no slap to the face and being told no.
That last part does raise a question. The Mistress setting up the control freak with the man who should never be controlled. Does this mean that Clara was meant to be this completely unlikable? If they planned all that on purpose they did it masterfully, and if they retconned it when they realized what a bitch they'd written her as, I still approve. Either way is admitting Clara is a bitch. Just get rid of her, I do not care how.
Now as for something positive. We all know it was just an extra in a cyberman suit but they gave that moment such weight that you felt it was the Brigadier. That is just quality storytelling.

You can't keep bringing a character back with no proper explanation and then proceed to kill the same character off again in the end.

But that is exactly what The Master does.

He's always returning from the grave with no explanation. It's his thing.
