Oscars - Best Animated Short

After much toiling to finalize the list of nominees for the "Tank Awards" (sorry it's been taking so long), I was watching the Oscars tonight and just saw the nominees for Best Animated Short. It made me wonder, will a Flash movie ever win an Oscar for Best Animated Short? Has anyone ever made a Flash movie that COULD have won the Oscar if it had been considered?

While I believe the Tank trophy is much cooler than an Oscar, I still think it would be a fun "challenge" for someone to make an Oscar-worthy Flash movie.

So I'm issuing the challenge: If anyone ever submits an animated short to NG that goes on to win an Oscar, NG will award them with a $10,000 prize! Depending on the future success of NG, I hope to raise that pot with each year that passes by. In the meantime, I hope the Tank trophy is enough to encourage people to step up their game!

Surely something by Adam Phillips could win an Oscar.

don't you have to be a member of the "academy" to be considered?

Not to be pessimistic, but I doubt a flash movie will win since you would need a whole team to make a very high quality flash for a long enough duration and have it popularized enough to be a movie. But who knows, anything can happen.

I concur. Keep at them. Bitey is probably only one of the possible contenders.

Why not? But if that ever happens, feel free to increase the site space and bandwidth of Newgrounds.
You wanna know why? Because the audience of the Oscars will make an account here or simply clog the servers. So, good luck with that.

Holy crap!!

Where does Newgrounds get its money aside from advertisements and merchandise?

Maybe as our skills and knowledge grow, we'll figure out how to "push" a movie into the Oscar nomination process, the way major studios traditionally do.

I was just checking up on it Tom, and it seems that technically a Flash movie COULD win one hypothetically. I don't see anything against it. Anyways, if anyone remembers the video Rejected, that was once a nominee, so if anyone could do that, it'd be amazing.

Lol, an oscar? That would be insane. I know a few guys that have a chance.

Adam - Hes amazing? Everyone knows him.
Johnny - It would be one funny tankmen short.
Egoraptor - Because everyone thinks his style is amazing.

A few others as well have a chance, but from the top of my head those guys! :]

Peace, St1k.

99.9% advertising, less than 0.1% merchandising... Although we're working on shifting that, which would be for the good of everyone here. For example, when you watch MGA2 in a pop-up window (currently not the in-page), the text ad beneath it is for the "Awesome" t-shirt, rather than an advertiser who is open to occupying ad space within a "mature" rated submission. It's a better ad, AND it's strengthening the promotion for Egoraptor's work, rather than driving people away from the site.

It's a long hard road, though... Definitely not as easy or as profiteable as it looks, but we're committed to making it work.

Sorry for the double post but I got a idea! how about we lock up Egoraptor, Adam Phillips, JohnnyUtah, Stamper and Michael Swain into one room, supply them with like five computers with only Flash installed on them and make them animate like a minute or so of high quality animating everyday for them to obtain food for the day. And just this for like 6 months, they could give birth to the greatest Flash Movie ever! 1GB SWF. LOL!

It looks like it could have been, but I can't find confirmation. But it does give hope that someone here could pull it off. :)

Idea so read this, because its good so I made this bold so you'd read this post. (Prolly)

Lolz, noob double post.

We should have a yearly contest and people submit shorts, and newgrounders user vote on the best one and we submit it to the oscars as a community. That would be cool and could possibly get our community even bigger!

Very nice. Sounds like a cool incentive and it seems very uplifting to think of an Oscar-worthy animation to make. I haven't animated in a while but you never know.

The idea will really be the main part of the short film. Adam Philips is an artistic genius but he may not even come close just due to the "idea" aspect.

Also just as a last note, whoever DOES want to create a short animated film, that would mean the animation has to be in between around 30 to max 40 minutes in length.
