that and classes I guess but that would lead to reading books that you referred to earlier, only this time your threatened with a failure stamp if you choose not to read them.

This may just be me, but I found that I can draw better when it is very late. I think it is because my brain is slowing down and it mixes the creativity from my dreaming with my consiousness of being awake.

Does this happen to anybody else or am I just crazy?

don't be lie me I didn't really learn anything about drawing so my talents are limited. I'm learning to break this habit but to answer you're question the reason alot of books are on anatomy because these are important steps to building your own style

yeah its true my art has a DBZ influence on it U_U

I heard that learning is something that you choose to do. It's along the lines of taking a horse to water (showing artist wannabe appropriate material) but you can't make him drink (artist wannabe poo poo's drawing the bowl of fruit study and goes strait to drawing terrible and violent stick figure 'art').

Who are you?

I find it's best to use traditional means when trying to improve, they give you less leniency with mistakes and you can't easily digitally correct them. You'll wish for ctrl+z so many times it'll make your head spin.

anyway other useful tips:

-Simplicity: the simpler something is, the easier it is for our brains to understand it. So when drawing comprise your guides of basic shapes. cylinders, cubes, spheres, etc. be sure you know how to draw them from every angle too.

-Fluency: To create a great drawing you must have a good mesh of construction and fluency. there should be some grounding, but also a feeling of realism and life. make sure you poses look as natural as possible hwile still keeping with the fundamentals.

-LIFEDRAWING: every forum I go to people stress this, drawing nude figures allows one to master anatomy, get a good sense of weight, and develop a greater understanding of poses and angles.

These guidelines are mostly for humanoids and creatures...backgrounds and the like are a whole different story.

Good luck man.

I use "learn how to draw" books. They have really helped me with shading and details. Here's a sample of what I've learned:

At 6/9/08 11:08 PM, fetusdoctor wrote: You learn to draw things by opening up a sketchbook and drawing things from photos or from real life. There's a few decent books that can help as well. Look for ones that show you how to build things from shapes, and avoid books that are really just there to "show off" what the author can do.

So yeah, draw from life or photo reference, and practice practice practice. You can put your stuff on here for critique, but you have to be open to the criticism people give you. Don't make excuses for your art.

Can someone teach me about this i always wanted to learn to draw. Im pretty talented in painting

1. throw your graphic tablet away, it's not a tool to learn to draw.

2. One of the best tips: start by drawing the basic shapes of the BIGGEST elements in your picture, and then move to the smaller.
So if you draw a person, draw the torso area, then the pelvis, legs and arms.

It's a lot easier to balance your shapes in relation to the largest one than in relation to a couple of smaller ones or from a small one to another small one.

3. BUY A.. that... thing where you click on the top and lead comes out... you know like a pencil you don't need to sharpen. FUck I don't know the english word for it. Buy that, 0.5mm, H.

That's for comic art. Ultimate precision and clarity.

Don't ever use those heavy 2b, 3b, 4b bullshit, that's for making drawings entirely with lead when you're trying to learn how to do some oil painting.
======

That's all I can think of for now that I know lots of books don't mention. And if you want to learn how to draw people, buy a sports illustrated or whatever and draw every page and I guarantee that afterwards, you'll be fucking excellent compared to when you started, but hey no one ever does that.
Including me.

I think it's called a mechanical pencil.

Never noticed you were from Quebec before.
A good trick to know english words is to write the french word on wikipedia, then change the language of the page (in the language box to the left side of the wiki page).

I use my tablet almost exclusivly for animation, all my practice and studys are done via paper and pencil

Not sure entirly but i feel: Drawing on the right side of your brain is a very comprehensive learning tool if you follow it exactly, i have seen definate improvement from my work on here which was posted to what i am doing now... should have a look. Great read, informative and easy to follow.

Response to how to learn to draw Jun 11, 2008

Read "Drawing with the rights side of the brain" by Betty Edward's.

Response to how to learn to draw Jun 11, 2008

I've been wondering the same thing too. I mean, sure, I'm really great at drawing (manga/anime) people from a head-on, two-dimensional angle, but I've been working a little bit with prespective lately. It's really tricky to learn though, if you don't have a real person to draw off of.

Also, I guess...draw animals? For my next flash, I have to learn how to draw a dog. Don't ask why.

This is my sig. It's basically proof of my awesome.

LOL, I can draw better in early morning, maybe around 5am. Anyway, I found the best way to practice is by observing things around you, then try to draw em.

For anatomy, I'm not that great myself. But alot of practice is a good start.

If you can write your name, then you already have the skills you need to draw. As the experts usually say: "Practice makes perfect." Just try your best, okay?

heh, if you look at the gallery, some of the "after this lesson" pictures in the gallery look like "wheee!!! i just found out how picasso drew faces!!"

(our class recently had that "revelation", mine had a hand sticking out of the mouth. "his words have power!!" i said. they bought it. not the picture, the explanation)

it sure might show you how to render individual pieces better, but not how to place them... something i have a bit of trouble with.

also, this pretty much sums up this thread....

You can't learn how to draw from a book. You have to teach yourself. Sure books and art classes can help you but you have to first create your own style and know what you enjoy drawing.
