Why does Canada have Thanksgiving?

Sorry for another topic, but I just wondered why they still haven't created their own national identity?

What are they thankful for anyway?

The fact they are so far out of the way that they will never have to fight a single war.

The fact that nature inspired their flag because they lack originality.

Canada just has Thanksgiving cuz they wan to be like the US

Response to Why does Canada have Thanksgiving? 2003-11-27 18:19:05

to be thankful for a succesful harvest (you might think thats stupid but being thankful for the harvest has been around for more than 2,000 years). While americans have thanksgiving for the pilgrims coming to the new world, our thanksgiving started only 40years after the american one did.

no no no, its you were OWNED by some stuff in europe, you know that little thing, the united kingdom? yeah, canada was a comen welth of it. and i beleive won full independance diplomatically, unlike the americans, but like a hundred or so years after the US did. and now they are mini-US

anywho, to whoever said they dont go to war. well, if you dont recall, they were in WWII and WWI (slightly, but there)

and also, most recently they were part of the international force in afganistan in 2001 (if you remember any of the big news stories, you'll remember 6 canadian soldiers being killed by an american bomb during the afgan war)

Yeah, we all know how stars aren't created in nature. And how no other countries have a star/stars on their flag.

And by the way, the meaning of the flag isn't "lol teh mapil leef", it means "From sea to sea" the red parts are the atlantic and pacific oceans, and the part with the leaf is Canada. We didn't make the oceans blue because we didn't want our flag to look like the Americans'

And Thanksgiving here, as we said, is to celebrate a successful harvest.

Dead.

Also, dont forget, if it wasnt for USA turning into a bunch of backstabbing morons back in the early 1800's, USA and canada would cease to exist but we would BOTH be provinces/states of britain. USA decided to turn on Canada/Britain which caused the war of 1812 which USA got OWNED and didnt even make it into canadian soil before retreating in michigan.

OMFG HAHAHAAH, first two posts, ignorance at its best. Um hello are u dumb? Giving thanks is not an American tradition, and if Canada WAS trying to be like the USA like u suggested, they would have maybe adopted a more important thing like the presidential system of government. DUH morons get a clue and stop starting such stupid topics.

Slightly? They were there from the beginning.

They havn't?

What are they thankful for anyway?

They are thankful they don't have a leader like we do.

The fact they are so far out of the way that they will never have to fight a single war.

The U.S. is far too. The reason we're in wars is because we don't leave other nations alone like Canada does. Do I need to remind you while Canada influences other nations, it's in a good way? They are one of the nations that are taking part in the international space station project. While USA is doing the same thing, it is also on the brink of nuking again while Canada just sits there in disgust like all sane man should.

The fact that nature inspired their flag because they lack originality.

The Egyptian Gods were combinations of animals and humans, and not original creatures. Does that make them unoriginal? "All men are created equal" was based on John Locke's Two Treaties of Government, does that mean Thomas Jefferson was lacking originality?

Fucks.

The sky is blue because of the way the earth is round. Only a specific spectrum refrects to your eyes from the sun so the white sunlight seemed blue.

During sunset when the sun's rays are cutting into the atmosphere sideways the angle of incidence changes and therefore a different are of the spectrum (orange) gets through. That's why sunsets are orange.

Or some stupid fuck like that.

because you touch yourself at night,
who gives a fuck? i don't give a shit and i live in canada, its a time to eat turkey with the family,
no one does that gives thanks shit anymore anyways, unless you live in a really lame home.
i think that thanksgiving day officially should be changed to turkey day
and if you think canada is americanized and lacks originality, well fuck man, you get the prize for being able to point out the obvious, you see nothing you said really matters when you think about it.
like i said, i live in canada, and I don't want to live in the states, all i can say, i'm not saying either country is better, like fuck, its all good man, cept the states can't have bongs
and you'll never take my bong away from me =)

Well, if you really want to know...

Long ago, before the first Europeans arrived in North America, the farmers in Europe held celebrations at harvest time. To give thanks for their good fortune and the abundance of food, the farm workers filled a curved goat's horn with fruit and grain. This symbol was called a cornucopia or horn of plenty. When they came to Canada they brought this tradition with them.

In the year 1578, the English navigator Martin Frobisher held a formal ceremony, in what is now called Newfoundland, to give thanks for surviving the long journey. He was later knighted and had an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean in northern Canada named after him--Frobisher Bay. Other settlers arrived and continued these ceremonies.

The third came in the year 1621, in what is now the United States, when the Pilgrims celebrated their harvest in the New World. The Pilgrims were English colonists who had founded a permanent European settlement at Plymouth Massachusetts. By the 1750's, this joyous celebration was brought to Nova Scotia by American settlers from the south.

At the same time, French settlers, having crossed the ocean and arrived in Canada with explorer Samuel de Champlain, also held huge feasts of thanks. They even formed 'The Order of Good Cheer' and gladly shared their food with their Indian neighbours.

After the Seven Year's War ended in 1763, the citizens of Halifax held a special day of Thanksgiving.

The Americans who remained faithful to the government in England were known as Loyalists. At the time of the American revolution, they moved to canada and spread the Thanksgiving celebration to other parts of the country. many of the new English settlers from Great Britain were also used to having a harvest celebration in their churches every autumn.

Eventually in 1879, Parliament declared November 6th a day of Thanksgiving and a national holiday. Over the years many dates were used for Thanksgiving, the most popular was the 3rd Monday in October. After World War I, both Armistice Day and Thanksgiving were celebrated on the Monday of the week in which November 11th occurred. Ten years later, in 1931, the two days became separate holidays and Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day.

Finally, on January 31st, 1957, Parliament proclaimed...

"A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed ... to be observed on the 2nd Monday in October.
