Run Boots Run

Author Comments

Boots is running, and getting faster all the time. Guide her through the level for as long as you can before losing control! Collect diamonds and avoid bumping into any obstacles - and try it all again to better your previous score.

Instructions: Press space or the left mouse button to jump. Hold it down to jump higher. Run as long as you can!

Run Boots Run is our "game-in-a-week game" that took three weeks to make. Close enough, right?

Update: Now with vastly improved framerate!

good

I noticed this is your first game on newgrounds, I thought this was great for a first submission. Keep up the good work : )

timknauf responds:

Thank you, we'll try to! We've got something quite different planned for our next game. Will be a bit more challenging, but we're looking forward to it.

No...

Don't submit things that don't work.
The character keeps falling through the floor at the start of the level. Maybe five seconds later during a lucky run. No testing was done on this game at all.
Graphics are so-so, both programming and graphics were a rush job done in five minutes or less, i can not rate this flash.

timknauf responds:

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with the game! I've never seen bugs like this on my machine, and none of our testers saw anything like it either. :^( I want you to know that we wouldn't *knowingly* publish a buggy game to newgrounds! As I've said in my other comments, there is something affecting some computers and not others. (I may well have taken the wrong approach to collision detection, because it should obviously work consistently.) It'd be good to know a little bit more about the specifications of your computer, and maybe we can get this ironed out.

buggy

There a re a lot of bad bugs, because I even died while running on a plain surface. I felt between the stones. Fix that and the game has a lot potential.

timknauf responds:

Hmm, there is obviously a collision detection problem that is only affecting some computers. It'll be a bit hard to track down, as Tristan and I haven't seen that bug on our own machines. Like I said to Alter-native, it'd be good to know a bit about your computer so we can try to track down the problem.

Boots Is No Sonic, But She Has a Lot Of Soul.

I hope character evolves along with your foray into the world of actionscripting. The game is a little too simplistic, it is less of a platformer and more of a timed event/minigame/whatever. All you do is basically press/hold the space bar and the mouse button to jump over pits and reach diamonds. Of course there is the matter of your jump reaching better height if you keep the space bar pressed. So far, it seems to be one those early arcadish style "points games" in where the goal is not to finish the game, but to last a long time playing it. I do run into an occasional problem where I fall in the middle of the ground. It probably just a bug you can work out in the end. I really can't gripe so much though because I like this game and you did a good job on it considering that you did it in three weeks which is very short time period when it comes to developing games. Did I mention liked the music? I really like the music...

timknauf responds:

Thanks for the thoughtful review, Alter-native. Glad you like the music! We haven't really seen the collision detection problem on our own computers or our friend's computers, but it *is* our first Flash game so I'm not surprised that there are bugs - although contrary to what marius-vanrhijn thinks, we did actually test it and it does work fine for us. :^) Could you tell me a bit about your computer (CPU speed etc.)? I think maybe the collision detection is failing when frames get dropped, because we're using (or trying to use) time-based rather than frame-based animation.
