Rombo

This is Rombo, my first person action/shooting game. In Rombo you control an apprentice who was given a task to restore the magic Rombo from the hands of the evil mage. The story is as follows:

----
You are the apprentice of the great Wizard, sent in the unholy lands to recover the Black Rombo from the hands of the evil mage's castle. In your journey through the lands, you'll encounter several creatures in evil mage's service. Do not think twice before sending them to meet their creator; these are damned souls, lost forever in the realm from where the evil mage came and transformed an once healthy place to a dead zone where only the darkest entities enter.

This isn't only your test to prove yourself worthy of the great Wizard's trust, but also the beginning of a great quest to restore the scourged land to its former status.
----

How to play:

Your weapon is your fireball magic spell, which requires mana to cast. Mana potions can be found around the levels, but your mana will refill as the time passes. To finish each map you have to find its exit, which is always heavily guarded and usually behind some locked areas. To unlock areas you must find the appropriate keys. If you stand in front of a door that requires a key you do not have, the key will flash at the top left corner of the screen.

To increase your score, you can pick up treasure items which can be found around the levels. However the best treasures are hidden in secret areas - these can be revealed by going near the wall where the area is and clicking on it (the cursor will become a hand as shown below). Also killing monsters increases your score. At the bottom part of the screen you can see how many monsters are alive in the level.

The keys
------------
Arrows, W/A/S/D: Turn, move forward/backward

Q/E or Space+Left/Right or Space+A/D: Strafe left/right

Shift: Turn 180 degrees (quick turn)

Tab, F6 or Page Up (depends on browser): Switch to fullscreen mode. (note: due to Flash security limitations only the arrow keys and space are available in fullscreen mode when using Flash Player 10. In Flash Player 9 the fullscreen mode is not available because keyboard is totally disabled when using fullscreen).

Left mouse button: Interact. Use the mouse to aim on the screen and move the cursor over the items. The cursor changes depending on what will be performed if you click:

Arrow - You cannot interact with the item
Hand - Pick up the item, or open the door
Aim circle - Attack the monster with a fireball
Crossed circle - Currently you cannot interact with the item

----
This is just the beginning of the story. I plan to release more Rombo parts with more levels, monsters, etc. While the game is short (you might finish it in a single hour), you'll see that there is something new in each level - from monsters, to gameplay elements, to items, area types, etc.

This game is great!

I just love the retro feel of it :)

Wow. AMAZING.

Epic!

badsectoracula responds:

Thanks! :-)

Aghhh!

Dude, you gotta do summit about the music! Seriously, it's a nice 8 bit tune, but it gets quite annoying.
But the game itself...There is definitely something. I'll be wainting the next ones!
(Nice touche with the Space+left/right strafe, as i'm an Azerty-boy)

badsectoracula responds:

Yes, i'll put a "turn music off" button in the next update :-)

I love old shooters like this

Games like this are hard to come by, and it seems like you put a lot of work into this, the only part I didn't like is when you walk into a room and you know there's enemies around the corner but you can't turn fast enough to shoot them, and you do run a bit too fast in my opinion. But still very enjoyable and balanced game.

badsectoracula responds:

Thanks :-). Indeed it took me a couple of months to make it, not including the rendering code :-).

You might want to try this: when you're in front of the door instead of going in, turn around about 90 degrees. Then use strafe (Q or E) to go in. Kill the guy in front of you and if there is another one, press the quick-turn button (Shift) to turn around and kill the other :-).

erm...

hulk hogan attack in cursed village? whatever. make charachter move slower. its very unrealistic.

badsectoracula responds:

I had a greatly audible laughter when i read the hulk hogan part :-D.

I'm not sure about the speed being realistic, but i think we agree i throwed realism out of the window once i had people fighting zombies and "hulk hogan" side by side :-)
