I made this over the span of about a year for MassArt. It was more like 4 months of crunch but regardless. I wanted mixed media and some sort of political commentary angle. I also wanted it to be the length of an old theatrical short and to take something that happened to me irl and really exaggerate it. Its based on when me and some friends ding dong ditched my other friends really conservative dad. He kinda just yelled at us but I decided to just take that concept and turn it into something really weird.
The car is an actual toy car I've had kicking around in my basement for years. I did not have a proper green screen and used a neon hoodie I have, lit only by a desk lamp or in some cases just my ceiling lights. The backgrounds in certain scenes are made with clippings of political books I own with Steadman-esque art on them. "Johnny Got His Gun" and "America's Constitution" both books I really admire and talk about America from very different perspectives. One of hope and patriotism and the other more cynical and about the horrors of war. I felt bad tearing them up honestly as I respect both but I think their use as collages helps sell the commentary.
I never really used after effects for an animation this extensively and I learned the most about it working on this. Which is what I'm most happy with.

thx man. i just did some smaller animations on my instagram. i have plans for a "suburbroz 2" and some other 3-5 min non-suburbroz stuff. should slowly be released in the coming years
I like the mixed media stuff and it's very creative, but you don't really have anything "normal" that happens to contrast against the wacky crazy shit, also there isn't really any reason for the plot events to happen, they just kinda do. Like there's no reason given for why the guy gets pissed at his own doorbell being rung for example.
i get what ur saying but I feel like the first minute or so is played pretty straight until they get to the neighbors house. I was trying to imply that he is a really angry, bitter person who wouldnt want to be bothered like AT ALL. If I had more time I probably wouldve really exaggerated the way his homelife is more. I was more focused on making jokes and creating a certain vibe with this one but I can see why if ur more interested in narratives this mightve dissapointed you.
I plan on making longer story focused stuff with these characters down the line in comic-form. So, look out for that if that interests you. thx for commenting!
