Reviews for "Maiden of Orleans"

This is kinda beast for a school project. Not a great game. But under the circumstances, so not terrible. 4.5/5

As a class coding project, it's great for the amount of time you had. As a game, besides the graphics there's a lot of work that could be done if this is going to be updated or expanded. The music, the battle system and actual progression of both the history and upgrading the heroine in RPG style. While at least the save/load worked, I got too frustrated trying to get through the woodland area at level 5 with combat getting no easier and completely random occurrence - nothing for about 90 seconds then winning one and losing the next before I could put the mouse over the Pause box to save.
I've played the PSP Joan of Arc game, so I appreciate what you're doing here. BTW, fix the Dormery that appears after you leave the house. Anyway, I didn't see any of the later story because I never got to Chinon - went into the woodland only because the other exits were invisibly blocked. Not nice to never get to important parts of the story because all the players get frustrated and stop.
Upgrade/expand/fix a class project and THEN put it on Newgrounds, OK?

dragerx responds:

The Way to Chinon is to the right the other paths are meant to be blocked, and updated at a later time. You have to continue along the woodlands! But thanks for the constructive critism:)

For a class project, the game isn't half bad. I find it playable in a sense that I enjoy it as a person who'd be looking for a game where I can play as Joan of Arc (and that's how I'll say it).

I would like to say this in the most blunt of ways that the choices of music you used for much of the game is rather horrible. Why? It was hard for me to take the game as a Joan of Arc game that seriously starting with the main menu theme. Kevin Macleod has a good collection of European-Renaissance inspired music to give the game a lot more feeling. Remember that appropriate music for any game is important in making sure that a game is playable.

I only have two things more or less bothering me. Physical and graphical boundaries are not always matching.

Also, why did you chose that spelling for her name?

dragerx responds:

We chose that spelling because this was for school and, it is the actual French way its written and not the English Translation to Joan and we were Lazy to perfect the barriers with the time we were given.

It's not as good as it looks initially, unfortunately:

=NEGATIVES
1) The music is god-awful. It doesn't fit at all the style of the game nor the graphics - and Kevin McLeod just generally makes annoying music.

2) The controls are horrid. You can't hold down more than one button - it's excruciatingly annoying for Jehanne to stop everytime I try to walk diagonally.

3) The story is not that great, because it reminds me way too much of Skyrim in the beginning when you have to walk up to the king in that manner - it just seems ripped off. The first room you're in also seems stolen from any Pokémon-game.

4) The battle scenes are stupid. When the opponent does nothing but attack, there is no point in doing anything but attacking too, because you still lose health defending. It's also weird that you don't keep your health points when leaving a battle.

5) It's frustrating for the game to restart when you die. It's just really, really demotivating to lose all your progress when you die.

=POSITIVES
1) The initial layout looks clean, which is a good thing, however upon entering the actual game the clean interface seems misplaced - look at medieval games, they all have medieval-looking menues.

2) The graphics are superb (both the characters and the terrain), which gave me really high expectations for the game, however the animation could use a touch or two. Another thing, it doesn't really look good when you zoom in on the sprites when you enter battle scenes - you should make other graphics for battle scenes.

Sorry, but it's not at all as good as I thought. 2.5/5 stars (2 stars in the rating system)

dragerx responds:

1) I agree, but it was the only royalty free music I could find any royalty free music
2) I purposely disable going diagonal because it is a tile based rpg, have you ever play final fantasy or pokemon *-*
3)The story is based on Joan of Arc so I don't see how I ripped off skyrim since Joan of Arc was born before.
4) Because It was a school project I wasn't bothered into make hitTests for Potion and such and 4 hours into As2 Coding man.
5) Im sorry but you can save.
