Just to confirm rumors on the BBS, NO, I am not dead! I am just busy moving to the new NG HQ in Mt. Airy!

I have also been busy because this has been my last few weeks with my girlfriend Tegan before she leaves for 4.5 months! We are flying out to San Fran. on Monday, then on Wednesday she is catching a plane to Vietnam, where she will be studying abroad in Hanoi. Wish her luck!

When I get back on Thursday night, I have to finish up a paper I am writing for one of my classes... My topic is the Newgrounds user community! I am looking for quotes and feedback from people, so respond to this post with your scholarly thoughts and opinions.

Basically, I'm looking for anything interesting about the NG community - how people interact, the different ways they choose to do so, how they achieve status, etc. Try to think of stuff that I might not think of, or weird observations that most people don't notice. How do you compare the NG community to other online communities? Do you feel it is the most user-involved site you visit, or are there better examples? Give me lots of feedback! If the paper is any good, I'll post it on the site. :)

I Think The Comunity is more like a fun community where people aren't obbsessed with a certain thing or whatever. this is kind of like a fun family or whatever.

Well tom,

The Newgrounds user community is quite a comlicated one. I Would have to say about 12.08 percent reasonable people having a good laugh, 0.02 are animal rights activists, and about 87.90 percent little perv twelve year olds. Attracted to the concept of making a half-assed movie and maybe getting some recognition for it, The portal usually ends up as the trashcan for aspiring animators who want to be loved by an immense audience. So.... in other words, New grounds is also a very informative web junction. It teaches kids about the wonders and awes of Fuckin' dat ass. Im sure many a youngin has gone and done the FDA safely and surely thanks to you and the LHM's helpful guidance. And too, with the overwhelming amount of it, people can learn to shoot strait and kill quickly, Yes I am talking about GUNS, The most wonderful tool in the world. With it's endless capabilities and neverending tons of fun, It can do anything. Any ways, closing my little shit peice here, I hope you can use this in your paper. In the words of Stile, "I swear I was just trying to take that kids tempature!"

Response to San Fran, Research 2001-08-12 18:21:28

NewGrounds is a place where animators can improve because of intense competition and a quality layout. It is also a source of free entertainment for animators and non-animators alike.

You can quote me on that.

Alright...here's my crack at sounding like I know something before my balls have fully dropped...

"Newgrounds, believe it or not, is a clean, truthful, almost enlightening web experience. You are not lambasted with failed attempts of apology, or sorrow, or anything of that nature. If someone is upset, they will say so as bluntly, and as HONESTLY as humanly possible; they will not let someone's feelings get in the way of the facts.

Society does not accept this insensitive attitude, but it is a way of life on NG. It's almost like in the army; you're feelings do not matter to the whole, but to certain friends, and to General Tom, your opinions ARE important.

To summarize, Newgrounds is an ever-evolving society. In fact, a society which in many ways, is superior to our own. No deceitful politicians or greed get in the way of the goal - which is simply entertainment for the citizens, the evolution of the community and light-hearted rapport between strangers.

I havn't seen any other site where users interact as they do here. On newgrounds you get it all. A-holes telling you to **** off, people telling you good job, Others telling you what to improve on in your movies. And by god, THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE!

I knew you weren't dead. I think it was just some spammer saying you were dead and "supposeively" posting a link to a philedalphia times column. And it was actually something like comp-u-geeks.com or some other gay porn site that that person so enjoys. Anywayz, I'm not dead either! Ok? I should be dead by now I commited suicide a month ago.. but it hasn't quit kicked in. Maybe I should try pills. Bullets don't seem to work. Nor does chewing bubble gum and then swallowing it. Well I hope you girlfriend has fun in Vietnam. I sure won't. Because I'm not going. I'm gonna stay home and play my newly aquired Chrono Cross.. I love that game.. Don't you? And I'm gonna bug my teachers in school. Also my school got new computer with internet acess. So I'll see you in school. And Maybe get caught looking at lesbian wrestling. Who knows? Also I am probably half the population of that 89. something horny 12 year olds. And Biggie_smalls is that other half. Well who really cares? I'm just trying to get a longer post than you. I can really type good huh? I bet at least there'll be 5 posts before I get done. Who knows? Do you. Also E-mail me your thoughts at WikedWiked44@hotmail.com or add me to MSN messenger.. or you can IM me on AOL at MagotFaceJuggalo... or you can just come here and post something concerning me, Jiggle_Nutz. Who knows maybe I'll be in the neighbourhood. Maybe I'll go and find shok and he'll take my bread. Oh yes and Shok does want your bread. Oh yes he does. And Tomw ants your PB & J and Wade wants us to congradulate him on getting married which I haven't done yet. CONGRATS WADE! I hope your baby isn't as ugly as you.. just kidding..

Here is the quote to use in your essay:

Response to San Fran, Research 2001-08-12 19:43:25

Hello Tom

It seems that there are a number of ways to achieve a 'status' within the newgrounds user community...

You can make lots of cool movies and the people will love you for it (Will Stamper), they will idol you and wish to copy your movies or take ideas etc

You can be one of those people that makes crappy stupid movies (RTFlash) or insults people on the BBS and this can make you famous either negatively or positively (people seem to like to insult others on the BBS as they get a kick out of it, and thereby promoting their status as a 'oldie')

I don't know if theres much else I can say, I find that the community is quite expansive and some of the people out there arn't bad, but it's hard to get into the inner circle of oldies and I feel that us 'newbies' who 'only' watch movies and rate them and make reviews and don't post on the BBS often are left out.

Thanks for listening and I hope you do well in the paper.

What I do in the NG community is a bit of a routine... first, every day I vote on the same 5 movies to gain my experience points and give the movies the rating I want them to be, and then I vote on the rest of the movies that I watch. Also, I love the experience = power voting system that the NG community has... I've never really used the BBS or Chat, but I've just started checking out the cams, and the Chat may be next.

First off, my congrats to your brother Wade, he has my best wishes with his marriage. Is it his first marriage? I'm just curious. And could we see what she looks like?

And I'm glad that you're still alive too... I was getting a bit worried when the webcam hadn't updated in a week/two, and you looked like an unshaved, despondent lost soul. On that subject... Update the damn cam, man!! ^_^

What about NG as a web community? I think there are five major things that make NG great as a web community. Be careful, I’m on a LONG RANT.

1) NG is ever-evolving, ever-growing. It's what keeps me coming back. I remember the days of '96 when I satiated myself on pure celebrity killing. Look how much Newgrounds has grown since then. Now we have a thriving Bulletin Board system, chat room, association with other websites, a user profile system, and the ever-growing Portal. People come back here every day, simply because there's always something new.

2) Newgrounds is totally free. If you wanted this much fun anywhere else, you'd have to pay a pretty sum to get it. All Newgrounds takes is a computer and an e-mail address. I don't know how you do it, but you probably provided the best free entertainment on the internet, (mostly) free of blatant advertising, sign-up fees, or complicated procedures.

3) There's so much user-communication. Every member gets a profile, complete with basic info, e-mail, IM, short message and complimentary picture. The BBS allows you to speak your mind freely on any topic and hear the thoughts of others. The chat room, though underrated, allows for instant communication. Even the portal has its review system so you can get (hopefully constructive) criticism from other users. NG deftly connects its users to each other.

4) NG allows you so many ways to distinguish yourself. Even with some 100,000 signed users, you can definitely make a name for yourself. Your portal entries, BBS posts, and profile can distinguish yourself from everyone else. Everyone on the BBS knows EvilGeishaWoman, because she's always posting. Everyone in the portal knows Will Stamper because he makes (lamentably deleted) great Flash movies. Even the assholes like Sideshow_Mel, Strawberry_Clock, Nikachu, RT_Flash, and all the rest, have made names for themselves by being assholes. ^_^ If you beg hard enough, or are drop-dead gorgeous, you could be on the Webcam pages. If you make a great movie, you could reach the top-50 list of all time, or the top-20 of the week, or the top 5 of the day. You at least reach the top-20 most-recently submitted. If you review the most movies of all, or submit the most, you get on the stats page. If you have the highest experience, you get on the top users page. Get the highest score in certain games, you get on the high score list. You could also be the BBS UOTD, the random selected member in the Users section, or a member of the NG-Fan Net. Strut your own style, and you _will_ be noticed.

5) The Portal. It's the heart of Newgrounds. It's what keeps me coming back. For most, it's a place to see great flash movies, and keep yourself entertained. But what makes the portal SO GREAT is that _anyone_ can make a flash movie, submit it, and instantly be seen by potentially thousands of viewers. There's no qualifications, no pre-requisites. Provided it meets basic codes of conduct, you can get your own little piece of Newgrounds fame. Granted, not every flash can be top-50, but it's nice to know that it _will_ be seen. And if you put some real effort into it, you can watch your creation rise to fame.

Newgrounds quirks? I like the odd spontaneity of the BBS, like the *still going* Cream of Wheat contest, or the HUGE “1000 bottles of shit” or “Still Gay” posts that went on FOREVER. I also find the variety of the BBS quirky… you have 30-long posts that say nothing but “screw you, n00b”, then you find the same people discussing the finer aspects of Time Travel and Gun Control. I also like People like sidshowMel and Strawberry Clock, who continually submit HORRIBLE movies, which makes them people you love to hate.

My only major problem with the NG community is that so many users are hyperactive, sex-craving 14-year-old boys who only play the dress-up games, make horribly bad movies, and post pure stupidity on the BBS about how they think Newgrounds sucks ballz, just to get attention. While NG _is_ a place for everyone, a little more maturity, mentally and physically, would be nice.

Basically, the only major thing Newgrounds lacks that some communities have is an e-mail system. But that’s hardly a problem, since there’s tons of other free sites like Hotmail.

Okay, I think I’m done. Holy crap, I went on forever, didn’t I? Sorry about that. Hope that helps you. GL with the paper. ^_^

I've observed that Newgrounds has created a sort of a cult gathering. people come home from work, school, and play, just to hop onto their pc's and check out whats new. their active participation in the (what i would like to call) "sorting of the good and the bad" rewards them with experience, and as they level up, they where their karma icons as badges of dedication to the community.

since i left NG for a month, i found out that it was much like the big brother scenario in the novel 1984, or you can compare it to religion.

"NewGrounds,
the religion for the digital entertainment age!"

Don't worry about what others think, because when you're cool, the sun shines on you 24 hours a day!
Hope this helps.

Tom, make sure you talk about how separate the fans are. Sexual orientations, hobbies, political viewpoints, ect.

You could also mention how divided the NG fans get between what NG offers. Groups like the BBS community, the chat community, the lurkers, and the flash artists often conflict with eachother for some reason or another.

I hope your move is successful and fruitful. Was the move a personal choice or is it cost-effective for NG?

Response to San Fran, Research 2001-08-13 00:15:58

Developing user status is kind of easy. At first when I was visiting Newgrounds, I didn't get much of it. It became a web experience that I loved. I didn't get much of it because I didn't have the time. I regret that because I wouldv'e been up at least another 5 or more levels now, easy, if I signed up, then. I made a movie, my first one. It did somewhat fairly well (without my voting.) That's something that's in my daily routine. I scheduled this daily routine because I barely have time to look at the majority of the movies due to my working schedule (12-16 hours a day). So, I go to the top five and vote on those. I sometimes give them reviews. The only time I give a nasty review is when they absolutely put no effort into it and you can tell. I vote on those top five (fairly) after watching the animations. Then, I do something unfair, but it is still FAIR. I go and vote 5 on my movie. It's like the old age sayings, "Every vote counts", and, "You have to vote for yourself, that vote could mean the difference between winning and losing."

Response to San Fran, Research 2001-08-13 01:12:55

The newgrounds community is actually not very complicated at all and is extremely cool. There's different ways of achieving status, whether it by be the chat room, BBS, writing reviews, the grounds gold and the content that is submitted. The highre the status seems to be based on the quality and quantity of the content posted. Its kickass!

Newgrounds is a website for 13 year olds who cannot understand the difference between "there", "their" and "they´re".
