When did female empowerment become a big issue all of a sudden?

Hi. A few weeks ago, as of the time of the posting of this thread, my nearby local Family Dollar store was selling M&M's candy with the following packaging:

Apparently M&M's is running a campaign to raise awareness for female empowerment. My local Family Dollar Store was selling M&M's in the aforementioned packaging as part of a contest.

There's articles about M&M's campaign online like this one here:

https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/mms-new-packaging/

On a related note I learned they added a new Purple M&M character:

I didn't even know they created a new Purple character and that M&M's made purple M&M's.

Please help. Thank you.

1910ish?

I think Tucker Carlson had a meltdown over this.

Brands make this stuff because liberals will buy anything that pretends to support their causes. Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather have this than have no one talking gender and women’s issues, but it’s at best an empty gesture

Good times good times good times good times

idk but when I see corporations do any sort of activism my alarm bells start going off, I'd prefer them just trying to sell their products and silently donate to actual activist organisations and NGO if they really care. This shit seems so fake to me.

There is nothing wrong with female empowerment In my opinion. However, when you do this you need to make sure you don't depower men in the process. As it stands right now this is what is happening in the process so that is what is wrong with it.

Mr. Carlson did have a rant about M&M's but it wasn't about female empowerment:

I apologize - your post struck me as funny.

My nearby local Family Dollar store was also selling this variety of M&M's with the special packaging:

Who cares. If people are offended by stuff like this, which is just a shallow attempt to make a company look better for the few that actually care, then it's just stupid.

I assume Mars owns M&Ms. What they are basically saying with this ad campaign is “Look at us! We’re nice to women!”

Like, shouldn’t that be your default behavior?

Yes they do.

Like over what? This should be entertaining.

Yeah, let's file this one under "wanting a prize for basic human decency" and not give it any more thought.

Seeing things about female empowerment in this day and age makes me think females are STILL being treated like second-hand citizens to a degree.

Not trying to sound sexist or anything like that but is this the case?

In some ways sadly yes.

Even girls? Females under 18?

@BUM-DRILLER, the female empowerment campaign M&M's was running was about WOMEN. It didn't say anything about GIRLS if I'm not mistaken.

Skittles is owned by Mars, the same company that owns M&M's, which explains a lot.

An acquaintance of mine told me Skittles had a campaign to celebrate Pride Month a few years ago:

This doesn't really surprise me.

I'm not a sexist, chauvinistic, egotistical pig who looks down on females and thinks he's better than them. I think males and females should be treated equally.

Sorry, but that Skittles campaign was ultra-based.

It wasn't a "LOOK AT US WE'RE OK WITH GAYS GO GAYS GO GAYS GO", it was the company removing the only thing they're popular about to send a message. They didn't add a "gay skittle" or do weird campaigns other than saying "we removed the rainbow because only one matters during pride month".

It was still weird what they did. I think that was a bit offensive.

Because its "woman's month" and big corporations realized that hopping onto popular progressive movements is a good way to sell products.

That explains a lot.

Only to homophobes, and they deserve to be offended.

Gee whiz, that's a curious demographic for an older Christian conservative man to transfix on.

@Volpon, what does your post have to do with this thread?

No. My empowerment comes from Newgrounds! :)

I do believe women's empowerment is definitely important, as long as it fights for equal treatment and opportunity for all genders (NOT equal outcomes since individual choices play a part in statistic gaps naturally. The former has mostly been achieved in the states minus a few isolated cases from what I have seen. The latter will make everyone feel like they are walking on eggshells in fear of being punished for even the slightest transgression of the closed gap)

And lately, I have been asking myself, "at what point does empowering become enabling?"

Again, it's definitely important to empower women (especially with the fight for reproductive rights). But bad behavior should never be enabled regardless if it appears "justified" or not.

I still dunno what “womens rights” are.

I assume you want to be treated like men.

So you want to be eligible for the draft?
