Reviews for "Castaway"

A good place to build on.

I like a lot of things about this. I'm always in search of a good, slightly long, RPG game. This had quite some substance and length. Long enough to keep me playing through to the last level. The enemies were steadily more challenging and the flow of gameplay was steady enough with the difficulty and items. I have many suggestions so this will be quite the lengthy review. Let me get my points straight.

First the big one - controls. The controls here are very poor. The weird combination of mouse and keys does not make for good gameplay. The controls are split among both and it makes things very inconvenient. You should either stick with the mouse and use that for moving, or make the keyboard movement more free instead of the restrictive movement. The movement is also too slow and the changing of directions makes the character stop, which is terribly irritating.
Hotkeys are a big need too. It's incredibly tedious selecting spells all the time and even more so switching between skills and abilities. Alot of the time I give up entirely on abilities altogether. It's also incredibly hard controlling pets because of the mouse only buttons. While I see the potential in making pets do a large amount of battling, the pet system makes it very hard for that.

The pets are pretty redundant. They take far too long to hatch and they are fairly weak in battle. They may have a ton of HP, but they receive far too much damage. Even the strongest pets - yes I waiting over 2 hours to get a skeleton warrior and an ogre - still fell too easily. After a while, I neglected the pets altogether. They became more of a hindrance - attracting aggressive enemies - than a help.

Related to that is the creature drops. Prices for potions were far too much for the initial stage. Money doesn't come easy in this game and the potions were far too expensive for usage. I don't get why creature drops only dropped pet healing items. I get that you might have been aiming to get pets into the battle more, but like I said the pets were horrible at fighting. So with no healing items whatsoever for the character, it was hard to grind as needed. And the tavern costs were too expensive for the start. So most of the time I'd have to just sit somewhere non aggressive and wait for my HP to recharge at that snail pace.

Also, I suggest an autosave function. It's troublesome only saving at the town. Especially when you're deep into a level.

Other things I'd suggest - a bigger inventory. 14 items is way too small for the amount of different drops in the game. Faster egg hatching rates. Pet equips to allow customising and strengthening pets and getting them more involved in battle. Reducing the ridiculously high poison rate. Antidotes don't come cheap and easy, but poison happens way too often and is especially dangerous in the start - and that happens very quick because the snakes come into play right at the first map.

Glitches - after leveling, my def goes down as though I wasn't wearing armor until I move to another screen. Also if I use a skill before attacking an enemy while I'm far away, and then quickly click the monster again, I do 2 skill attacks in a row.

There's a lot to like, but there's a lot that could be improved. I'd suggest looking at the game 'Arcuz' for a more intuitive interface for the RPG (or create your own mouse based controls) and then expanding more on your pet system. Make them more reliable in battle. Make them equip-able or something. Or beef up their defense stats. And more controllable for a larger role in the game.

I might have missed some things, so I might PM if they come to mind.

This shows a lot of promise.

It'd be 10

If the first real beetle I fought, didn't kill me in 2 hits :|

Awesome game!

Few glitches though...

Great game!

This game was well made but there are some small things that could be fixed.Exits were extremely difficult to find and item drops could be a pain but these are only small problems in an overall great game.

good game

You should make it more apparent where to exit one area to get to another. Quest items should drop a bit more frequently.

Other than that, it looks really well put-together.
