At first I was like "oh, look at that, it's Pixelated Roguelike Dungeon Crawler 439932. Lame." However, for some reason, I saw myself getting hooked and playing again, and again, and again. I'm not sure why this game works so well.
Now, just to clarify, the graphics are not bad, they're quite nice and cute. However, there are billions of roguelikes with very similar pixelated art styles, so it really doesn't stand out in that regard. The music is quite neat, though, I just wish there was more than one song.
Maybe this game works well because it is super straight forward compared to other roguelikes. You just go around, collect treasure, fight monsters, and move on. No need to think about builds, skill trees, or missing a beat in the song.
There are problems, though, like the fact that you're basically the luckiest person alive when you run into a pillow, and some seeds simply do not have them, and the fact that the character moves very weirdly, like, it takes a step when you press the button, but it only gets going if you hold it down after standing still for a bit, kinda like when you're typing.
In the end, this game is a really satisfying, simplistic experience that I find strangely absorbing. The fact that this is a jam entry is kind of impressive, given how replayable it is. If only it kept high scores or a score leaderboard, that'd be the tits.
